The Aqueduct Veluwemeer is a navigable aqueduct over the N302 road near Harderwijk, in the eastern Netherlands. It is located under a small part of the lake Veluwemeer and at the same time connects the mainland Netherlands to Flevoland, which is the largest artificial island in the world. There is constant traffic flow over the aqueduct as well as the road, unlike drawbridges or other roadway structures.
The aqueduct was opened to traffic in 2002, about 25 meters long and 19 meters wide, and has a water depth of 3 meters that permits small boats to pass through. There is an estimated 28,000 vehicle passes every day. Footpaths are built on either side of the aqueduct for the public that perfect to enjoy the view.
Approximately 22,000 cubic meters of concrete were used in the construction of the aqueduct, and steel sheet piling was also installed to keep water and sediment from leaking onto the road below. There are three man-made lakes surrounding Flevoland, which were constructed from reclaimed land in the region. Flevoland encompasses a region of 374.5 square miles (970 square kilometers), divided into two drained sections: Flevopolder and Noordoostpolder.
