Sore Throat Symptoms, Causes, and Home Treatment

A sore throat occurs when the pharynx, or the back of the throat, becomes inflamed. People often experience it when they have a cold or the flu. The tonsils and adenoids may also be affected by this inflammation if they have not already been removed. Throat irritation can range from harmless to potentially dangerous.

Symptoms

Patients with acute sore throats complain of burning and dryness in the throat, chills, fever, and some hoarseness or laryngitis. Symptoms include swelling and tenderness of the lymph glands along the sides of the neck. There may even be a grayish-white membrane covering the back of the throat.
Swallowing may be difficult for the patient, especially during the acute phase. Irritation of the nasal passages may also result in postnasal discharge. It causes a high fever, sharp pain, and swelling in patients with ‘Streptoccal’ sore throats.

Causes

The most common causes of sore throats are bacteria and viruses. This condition can be triggered by a wide variety of ailments. Colds and influenza are the most common of these ailments.
Sore throats can also be caused by tonsillitis, mumps, sinusitis, measles, and diphtheria. Sore throats may be caused by leukemia on rare occasions. A common cause of this disease is excessive smoking and talking, as well as frequent use of the voice in certain professions such as singing, acting, and teaching.

Treatment

According to the severity of the sore throat, a patient should fast on orange juice and water for three to five days. Every two or three hours, he should take orange juice diluted with warm water from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. every day.
A warm water enema should be used daily to cleanse the bowels. If you have a more serious case, you should do this twice a day. The throat should be treated with a wet pack every two hours during the day, as well as at night.
Wrap a piece of flannel around the affected part and wring out some linen material in cold water. Warm water mixed with a pinch of salt can be gargled several times over the throat. It is highly beneficial to take a hot Epsom salt bath every day during this period.
During the next three or four days, patients may adopt an all-fruit diet, eating juicy fruits like oranges, apples, pineapples, and papaya three times a day at five-hour intervals. Following this, he can gradually incorporate seeds, nuts, grains, fresh fruits, and raw vegetables into his diet. As part of your daily health regimen, you should do dry friction, deep breathing, and other exercises.
