In Glacier National Park, you can hike to Redrock Falls from the Swiftcurrent Pass Trailhead in Many Glacier. The Many Glacier Road leads to the trailhead at the end of the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn parking lot. There is no difficulty level to this hike, so it’s perfect for both novice hikers and those with hiking experience. Indeed, Redrock Falls is an amazing hike for all people. This is an excellent choice for the entire family to have a picnic since it’s relatively short and flat.
The first destination on this hike is Fishercap Lake, which is a third of a mile from the normally crowded parking lot. To reach the shore, it’s just a short walk. This gem might be overlooked, but it’s worth the side trip as the view of the lake and mountains is spectacular. Those with young kids will enjoy the beach area for a picnic or a short hike. Mornings and early evenings are good times to spot moose at Fishercap Lake.
It was named after George Bird Grinnell, better known as “Fishercap” by the Blackfeet Indians. In hot months, like June and July, the trail offers breathtaking scenic views as well as wildflowers the whole way. You may see a wild bear from far away. Perhaps your excitement and energy are only to be let down because sometimes the trail is closed due to bear activity. In the fall, when the aspens’ leaves change to golden yellow and orange, this trail offers majestic views since it passes through a long stretch of aspens growing alongside the path.
During the trail’s journey towards Redrock Falls, the trail mainly travels beneath the canopy of the forest, but there are several open areas that offer outstanding views of the mountains nearby. When in season, you can also pick thimbleberries and huckleberries that make tasty snacks. In spite of the fact that this trail is very popular, hikers are still advised to make plenty of noise to alert bears that we are passing through their territory.
Redrock Lake, the second destination on this hike, can be reached after hiking 1.7 miles. From this lake, you can also enjoy beautiful views. On the west, you’ll see 8436-foot Swiftcurrent Mountain almost directly and 8851-foot Mt. Grinnell almost directly to the southwest. A fire tower can be seen atop Swiftcurrent Mountain if you look closely. Located below Mount Grinnell, Redrock Falls lies on the other side of the lake.
The trail continues along the northern shore of the lake from here. Around the western shore, you’ll see some of the red rock formations that inspired the lake’s name and the falls’ name. Approximately 2 miles into the trail, hikers will reach an unmarked split. By proceeding along the left fork, one can reach the lower falls.
You will see Redrock Falls is one of Glacier National Park’s more impressive waterfalls because it consists of several cascades. There are many spots where you can take unique photos of the falls. Keep an eye out for trips and twists! Stunning, deep red rocks surround the water below Redrock Falls. However, the lower falls offer several side trails, called social trails, that provide vantage points to view the upper and lower falls. A relatively easy scramble is well worth the effort if you’re looking for some great photographs.
The highest falls in the series can be seen after returning to the main trail for a short distance. With Swiftcurrent Mountain as a backdrop, it will make for a great view. The hike can be extended to visit Bullhead Lake further up the valley if you still have the energy. It would add 3 miles and 100 feet of climbing to your hike. The waterfall was a very rewarding view at the end.
