A tropical tree is found in the rain forests of Central and South American countries like Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. Lovingly, Psychotria Elata is called Hooker’s Lips or the Hot Lips Plants.
However, this hooker’s plant has apparently evolved into it’s present shape to be a magnet for pollinators including hummingbirds and butterflies. According to Oddity Central, the bracts are only kissable for a short while. Before they spread open to expose the plant’s flowers. So if you wanted to plant this amazing Mother Nature. Then find yourself a Hot Lips plant and do it while you still can, but make sure the bracts are only kissable for a short time.
Hookers lip plant bark and leaves are commonly used as a folk medicine to cure earaches, coughs, and skin irritation or rashes. Moreover, in Panama and Colombia, the hooker’s lips flower is used to treat dyspnea. In Nicaraguan, it is used to help with the side effects of snake bites. All parts of the Hookers plant have been recognized to be used for this reason. For medicinal uses, the plant can offer a psychedelic effect that can potentially be used medically but is mostly used in ceremonies in native communities.
Characteristically, the lips of the flower will be harvested in a secondary growth forest. There has been little research done and most of the data found on the plant are anecdotal evidence from native populations such as with the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties the plant contains.
