Located in Banlung Municipality, Ratanakiri Province, and north-eastern Cambodia, Lake Yeak Laom is a volcanic Crater Lake and tourist attraction. Located in a protected area, it is about 5 km south of Banlung town, the provincial capital. It has a diameter of 800 meters and a depth of 48 meters.
Due to its volcanic origin, it has a unique shape and depth. Yeak Laom was named one of the world’s 15 most beautiful crater lakes in 2012. With its crystal clear waters, Yeak Laom stands out against its vibrant green background. Right after the rainy season may be a good time to visit. There may also be wild animals around, as well as exotic birds and butterflies.
In Ratanakiri’s mountain region, a volcanic eruption created the lake around 700,000 years ago. There is an almost perfect circle formed by the shore of Lake Yeak Laom. As per Tampuan folklore, the lake was formed when a massive dug a pit to retrieve his stolen daughter from a suitor. Lakes are formed when rain fills pits.
For the Tampuan people, the lake and forest have spiritual significance during harvests, plantings, or family sicknesses. May–October is Banlung’s rainy season, while December–February is its dry season. In general, April is the warmest month, while January is the coldest. The wettest month is July, while the driest is January. A tuk-tuk or car ride from Banlung will take you to Yak Loam, a popular tourist destination.
A ring of forest surrounds Lake Yeak Laom, along with life jackets are provided for swimming in the emerald waters. While it appears small, you’ll spend an hour walking it because you’ll stop to admire the lake, take photos, and view the spiders and butterflies. Access has been made easier with wooden docks with steps.
The lake is surrounded by a 3-kilometer path, which includes a small museum that offers insight into Tampuan culture. You can hire ethnic costumes for photo shoots as well as buy souvenirs made by hill tribes nearby.
Handicraft stores are located at the entrance, selling souvenirs made by the hill tribes. Entry fees are $0.25 for Cambodians and $2 for international visitors. There are stalls where you can purchase food or bring your own food from outside.
