Take a trip to Morton National Park to see Fitzroy Falls

New South Wales Southern Highlands region contains Fitzroy Falls, an Australian village located within the Wingecarribee Shire. Yarrunga was the locality’s original name, but it was changed after the 266-foot stunning waterfall. The Wodi Wodi indigenous people were familiar with this waterfall.

Fitzroy Falls is located within Morton National Park’s northern precinct. You can reach Fitzroy Falls by driving 18km east along Nowra Road from Moss Vale.  Morton National Park is most famous for its Belmore Falls, Fitzroy Falls, Pigeon House Mountain, and Kangaroo Valley.

It was Charles Throsby who first saw it in the early 19th century. During his visit to the area in 1850, Sir Charles Fitzroy, the Governor of New South Wales, named the waterfall after him near the mouth of Yarrunga Creek in Morton National Park.

Along the way, you can explore waterfalls and lookouts. While the East Rim walking track offers slightly better scenery, this one is considered easier. With a few steep sections, the West Rim track is generally easy. Fitzroy waterfall plunges 81m into an untouched valley, making it one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Australia.

The area was inhabited in the middle of the 18th century, but little development took place. Motor vehicles enabled tourists traveling towards the Southern Highlands to stop at Fitzroy Falls. As a result of Mark Morton’s tireless efforts to preserve its beautiful and unique landscape, the area became a national park in 1938. Prior to the park receiving its current name, Morton died that same year.

The falls and other natural features can be viewed from pathways and boardwalks, as well as substantial parking and catering facilities. Take a stroll through the tranquil bushland and enjoy lunch at the picnic tables surrounded by birdsong after a short walk from the car park.

It is not recommended that you attempt to walk to the bottom of Fitzroy Falls. An unmarked trail and disused path make it incredibly dangerous to climb rocks using ropes. From Fitzroy Falls to Kangaroo Valley, a challenging 30km cycling route leads to a secluded valley within one of the most beautiful and secluded areas of Australia. Wildlife such as wallabies, kangaroos, and birds will be visible up close.

Fitzroy Falls had 216 residents at the 2016 census. There were 220 people living at Fitzroy Falls according to the census of 2021. Is it possible to fish at Fitzroy Falls Reservoir? You can catch trout and bass in the reservoir if you want to try your luck.
