You can’t go to the Catlins without visiting McLean Falls, the most famous waterfall. McLean Falls descend several steep drop-offs and terraces on the Tautuku River in Catlins Forest Park, reaching 22 meters at their highest point, where they meet their first water pool. After that, it descends over several terraces for many more meters. It is really impressive to see the roaring water and its size.
Despite its spectacular nature, McLean Falls’ smaller sister waterfall, Purakanui, has been described as the most visited waterfall in the region because of its ease of access. To reach the top of the pond, climb the stones if you are confident. The location is perfect for taking picturesque photos.
The McLean Falls River Walk can be accessed from Rewcastle Road, three kilometers from the Southern Scenic Route. As there are stairs, the track is easy but worth visiting despite its well-maintained condition. It takes 40 minutes to walk back. There is a large parking lot with toilet facilities. There are parts of the road that are gravel, but they are also well-maintained. You can visit the trail year-round and it’s picturesque no matter when you visit. You may bring your dog, but it must be on a leash.
Rimu, Kamahi, divaricating shrubland, large trees of fuchsia, Olearia, and podocarp forest are among the native forest types seen along the way to the falls. Additionally, a footbridge named for early immigrant Doug McLean, who periodically bathed in Duckaday Creek, spans the creek. There are views of the Tautuku River and bush along the stroll along an easy grade along the Tautuku River valley.
The Department of Conservation maintains the path, including boardwalks and footbridges, and gravels it regularly. You can reach it by turning south on Rewcastle Road, 11.6 kilometers from Papatowai off the Chaslands Highway. To reach the parking lot, you will have to walk another 3 kilometers. It is not accessible to wheelchair users.
Besides Matai Falls, there are also Purakaunui Falls in the Catlins, both of which are pretty stunning. While all of them are worth a visit, McLean Falls is the best. The Catlins have no better waterfall than this one.
