Bell Rock Sedona is a sandstone formation in eastern Arizona, near the city of Sedona. Bell Rock is a great spot for both hiking and photography. It’s located off Route 179 between Sedona, Arizona, and Oak Creek Town Center, which makes it easy enough that even if you don’t know where you’re going or what kind of photo opportunities await outside this lovely little hike-and-photogenic mountain,
A popular tourist attraction in the Verde Valley region, it is noted for its distinct shape: that of a bell hanging upside-down. It has become the signature landmark of the surrounding area, officially designated the Bell Rock Pathway, which includes an adjacent hiking trail through red rock country.
Bell Rock Sedona is 1499 meters tall and is world-renowned for its beauty and spiritual energy. A popular hiking destination for locals and visitors produces a number of energy vortices within a few miles of the bell rock formation, which contribute to the sometimes mystical atmosphere of this beautiful red-rock country.
Though Bell Rock Sedona is famous for its spectacular red rocks, which clambered around, and it’s made mostly of very fine-grained sandstone, formed by windblown sand reworked by the advanced and retreating oceans in the early Permian period 275 million years ago. Ringing rocks are sometimes called sonorous, or lithophonic. They sound like a bell when struck and can be found all over Skiddaw in England, for example, with their musical stones!
Sedona’s current Native cultures are a mix of those that have been in this area for centuries. The Yavapai and Tonto Apache moved into the Sedonean region, as did other influential tribes such as the Navajo or Hopi Indians, who may actually be descendants of Southern Sinagua people long ago.
Trails of Bell Rock
The 3.6-mile trails at Bell Rock are amazing; if you’re adventurous and choose to climb all the way up, you have to do a 2-3-hour hike. It is definitely worth doing so because you can walk around longer, but not necessarily less than 45 minutes because it’s such an extensive hike! However, once there, the views make this hike worth every step! This hike will take you through some of the most beautiful and historic landscapes in Mineral County.
Along this pathway, travelers can enjoy fantastic views of Bell Rock as well as Courthouse Butte—two landmarks that are sure to leave an impression on their visitors! Most parts have a wide, hard surface with only occasional steep hillsides, making them suitable for all ages and abilities. There may be some rocky areas around Bellrock since it’s not always smooth sandstone rock like we’re used to back home (so keep your eyes peeled if something doesn’t feel right or look quite right!).
