Etched within the rock sanctuary of Perperikon, close to Kardzhali in southern Bulgaria, is the largest ancient water storage tank in the Balkans. The city of Perperikon has been inhabited since approximately 5000 BC. Famous archaeologist Nikolay Ovcharov uncovered the water tank and believes it proves Perperikon was once heavily populated and had an abundance of water sources. According to Ovcharov, the two unusual ceramic figures also found at the Perperikon rock sanctuary depict a snake, dragon heads, and an upright phallus on a throne.
The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon is located on a 470-meter-high rocky hill in Bulgaria. In addition, a local shrine to Orpheus, located close to the town of Tatul, is older than the Giza Pyramids, having been there since 6000 BC. This massive ancient water tank measures 12 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 6 meters deep. This megalith has a capacity of 432,000 liters. Perperikon is an amazing place to visit, where you can see the largest megalith ensemble site in the Balkans.
