The Red-vented Bulbul is a small bird with bright red feathers on its head and belly. They also have black wings that contrast sharply against their bodies. This beautiful songbird has an unmistakable call that sounds like “purrr-rrrr” or “piu piu piu. Red-vented bulbul can be found in India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka as well as other tropical countries where they’ve been introduced such as East Africa (Kenya).

Red-vented bulbul was first sighted during World War II by British soldiers stationed there for training exercises prior to the Normandy Invasion. These birds are known for their bright red feathers and their melodious songs. Small and colorful Red Vented Bulbuls are common in urban areas, parks and gardens. They often perch conspicuously at the tops of trees or other high places, where they will sing loudly to attract mates or defend their territory against intruders.
