There are numerous uninhabited islands in Turneffe Atoll in Belize, which is the largest atoll in the world. The archipelago rises out of the seabed and is surrounded by a beautiful coral reef. As Turneffe Atoll is located 25 miles from Belize City, they are primarily low-lying mangrove islands with some pretty large sandbanks surrounding a shallow lagoon.
One of the Caribbean’s most biologically diverse areas is the Turneffe Atoll, which has experienced relatively little human development. A small aid to navigation can be found on Caye Bokel at the southern end, while Mauger Caye, at the northern end, has its eponymous lighthouse.
This marine reserve is one of Belize’s largest, making it a joy for environmentalists. Blue Marine Foundation, Bertarelli Foundation, and Oak Foundation have all championed and supported the creation of the reserve. With an excellent selection of diving spots, diving and snorkeling here are sublime. Among the highlights lies Turneffee Elbow, a dramatic drop-off at the southern point, which is more exposed to currents than the rest of the area.
In Turneffe, numerous threatened and commercially important marine species live. Â A total of 500 species of fish can be found here, as well as 65 species of stony coral, sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, seabirds, and many other types of wildlife. As a result, the reef attracts a stunning array of fish; Rendezvous Point, on the northern end, offers stunning wall diving; and Lefty’s Ledge has eye-catching spur-and-groove reefs.
Typically, bonefish can also be caught on the shallow flats of Turneffe. Catch-and-release fishing is the norm when it comes to sport fishing. Blackbird Caye, which lies halfway down the eastern side of the archipelago, is home to many resorts and the Oceanic Society field station.
It is generally expensive to stay at all-inclusive resorts in Belize City, including transportation there and back. Usually, they are picked up at the international airport and include all meals and diving or fishing packages.
There are hammocks to relax in and some excellent snorkeling right offshore, but most guests will be fishing or diving most of the time. Even though being out here is heavenly, and even dreamlike at times, you will need repellent to avoid sandflies and mosquitoes. Read More –Â Thousand-Foot Falls in Belize
