After a series of legal battles with the UK government, the platform was abandoned and remained unused for several years until 1967 when it was occupied by Roy Bates, a former British army major. Bates declared the platform an independent principality and named it Sealand. The principality was established as a family-run business with Bates as the sovereign and his wife and children as the royal family. Since then, the Bates family has ruled Sealand, issuing passports, coins, and stamps, and attracting a small but dedicated group of citizens.
Sealand faced several legal challenges from the British government, who claimed that the platform was located within their territorial waters. However, Sealand argued that they were not subject to British jurisdiction as they were located outside of the country’s territorial limits. The British government eventually backed down and recognized Sealand’s sovereignty.
Sealand as a Micronation
Sealand is classified as a micronation, which is a self-proclaimed nation that is not recognized by other countries. While Sealand is not recognized by the United Nations or any other sovereign state, it has a functioning government, flag, national anthem, and currency. Sealand has a population of around 27 people, most of whom are members of the Bates family or Sealand citizens who have purchased titles of nobility. In 1978, a group of German and Dutch nationals attempted to take over Sealand by force but were repelled by the security forces.
In 2000, Sealand made headlines when it was revealed that it had hired HavenCo, a company that provided offshore web hosting services. HavenCo was established to take advantage of Sealand’s unique position as a micronation, which allowed it to operate outside of the jurisdiction of most countries. HavenCo’s services were used by several controversial websites, including The Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks.
Despite Sealand’s attempts to operate outside of the jurisdiction of other countries, it is still subject to international law. The Principality has signed several treaties, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Geneva Convention on the High Seas.
Sealand Flag & Currency
The flag of Sealand features a red and black field with a white diagonal stripe running from the upper hoist-side corner to the lower fly-side corner. In the center of the flag is the coat of arms of Sealand, which features a white castle on a red field with waves below.
Sealand has also issued its own currency, known as the Sealand dollar or SEAL. The Sealand dollar is not recognized as a legitimate currency by any other country or financial institution, and its value is not tied to any other currency or commodity. The currency is primarily sold as a novelty item for collectors and supporters of Sealand’s self-proclaimed sovereignty.
Sealand Language
