The Bastakiya in Dubai – The beautiful old part of Bastakiya is a stunning collection of traditional Gulf houses, which are topped with wind towers that are a plethora of varying sizes and laid out in a rabbit-filled maze of narrow passageways. The most charming is the small Coffee Museum packed full of coffee-making tools from the past and other artifacts from across the globe. The unique concept of bringing coffee from all over the world gather in one place is also part of the Al Bastakiya.
The museum is comprised of two floors. One is the ground floor a shop where customers can purchase coffee of their choice. Different roasting styles and brewing methods are shown in real-time on this floor. On the 2nd floor, there is a historical book that is related to coffee.
Its town Al Bastakiya was primarily built by wealthy Persian Merchants who were attracted to Dubai because of the abundant trade opportunities and incentives provided by the Emirati government. The district was named for Bastak, the south-western Iranian village of Bastak.
The other places worth visiting are worth a visit are the Coins Museum, containing an impressive collection of more than 400 Islamic coins. Also worth a visit is it is home to the Architectural Heritage Department, boasting the largest and most tiny courtyard with beautiful views of Bastakiya from its rooftop. The nearby Majlis Gallery, the oldest of the city’s galleries, was established in 1989 and features monthly exhibitions that showcase the works of Emirati as well as international art.
With its office located at the eastern end of Bastakiya the first-of-its-kind Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding SMCCU, also known as SMCCU offers popular tours that include the Jumeirah Mosque and a number of events that take place in Bastakiya itself, such as guided walks and tours of the city, Gulf Arabic classes and “cultural” breakfasts and lunches that give you the chance to taste the traditional cuisine while talking with the center’s Emirati staff.
Mawaheb and Art Studio is owned by beautiful people who are adults with disabilities. The studio is only for committed and determined individuals who are over or at least 16 years of age. Mawaheb offers the chance to improve your life skills by creating artwork and demonstrates that everyone is capable of being imaginative in their own individual style.
XVA gallery opened in 2003. It is one of the top galleries in the Middle East that specialize in contemporary art from the Arab world, Iran, and the Subcontinent. The gallery’s artists showcase their diverse cultures and perspectives that challenge viewers to release any preconceived notions or prejudices so that they can fully understand the art. The gallery also has the Art Hotel as well as a Cafe offering Middle Eastern vegetarian food.
Make Art Cafe opened in November 2015 and runs its business in an outdoor courtyard in a beautiful historic villa located that is located in one of the most beautiful heritage places in the UAE. So, whenever you visit this part of the world, then The Bastakiya in Dubai is a must-visit place.
