In no other place in the world are these kinds of pebbles found except in Fuvahmulah and they sparkle even after being taken away from the beach. Pebbles from Thoondu are frequently collected as souvenirs by visitors to the island. Surfers of all levels will find Thoondu’s waves ideal for both beginners and experts. The best time to surf is between June and August, during the southwest monsoon.
The Thoondu is often characterized by a phenomenon known as Bissaaveli. By moving the sand of the beach towards the edge of the reef, part of the Bissaaveli is created, surrounded by the sand and island shore. Locals love to watch this natural event, which attracts hundreds – perhaps thousands – of visitors. A well-formed Bissaveli creates a natural shallow swimming pool where locals enjoy swimming when it is well-formed.
As with Bissaaveli, this phenomenon is unique to the Maldivian archipelago’s Fuvahmulah. There is no other beach on the island, or in the Maldives, with pebbles that are smooth and shiny. The unique conditions and natural beauty of Thoondu Beach attract tourists from around the world. There are daily flights between Fuvahmulah and Male, which are connected by Fuvahmulah’s airport.
