Why is the beach in Santorini red?

The red sand on the beach is a result of the high levels of iron oxide in the surrounding rocks. This gives the sand its distinctive red color, which makes for a beautiful backdrop against the blue ocean water. The cliffs that surround the beach are also made up of this same rock, making for an impressive sight.

How do I get there?

The Red Beach is a beautiful spot on the island of Santorini, located in Akrotiri village near an excavation site that’s famous for its ancient ruins. You can easily reach it with your car or via boat tour from Fira, which runs every day during high season months; just make sure you get updated schedules so as not to miss any opportunities!
Walk down the red-colored path to a unique and impressive beach. The only issues you’ll face on this hike are some 150 steps that lead into deep sand, but once there are no more than 100 meters left of your journey, all problems will be solved!
This secluded shoreline has not much else in terms of scenery; however, what it does offer includes protection from sunburns with plenty of supplies at every canteen before starting off towards these cliffs’ shade (you’ll need them during hot summer days) and windblown spaces where one can escape while taking time out.

Amenities at Red Beach of Santorini

The best thing about Red Beach is that it’s free to enter. You’ll find sun loungers and umbrellas for rent near where you exit from the church, but there are no freshwater showers or toilets in this area either, so be prepared! In high season (July–September), plenty more people come than during other times; just keep an eye out when choosing your spot because not all spots here offer privacy between their walls.
